Korean juggernaut rolls over England

16 October 2016

England went into the first of their two toughest matches as, perhaps, the most improved side of the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup. They had the confidence and would have hoped to put more of a fight than they actually did against the Republic of Korea. The Asian side, however, was not in a forgiving mood and kept their unblemished record in the tournament intact. They ran out winners with a clinical performance, beating England by a 56-17 margin.

One of England’s big strengths has been the high number of raid points they have collected in the tournament. Temi Tope Adewalure and Keshav Gupta have proved to be more than a handful for oppositions but were completely nullified by a well-drilled Korean defence. Both of them could muster only a single point as Adewalure spent 24 mins off court. Yong Joo Ok and Gyung Tae Kim shone for the Koreans with six tackle points each. Such was their defence that England managed their first raid point only in the 18th minute!

It wasn’t all about the defence too for the Koreans as Cheol Gyu Shin and Dong Gyu Kim picked up 10 and 7 raid points respectively. They had the likes of Jang Kun Lee and Tae Beom Kim on the bench which didn’t seem to have any negative effect on the team. Instead, there was no let-up in their intensity as they handed the English a masterclass. Jang Kun Lee did eventually come off the bench to score a solitary point and was greeted by a loud cheer from the audience. Interestingly, upcoming Korean talent Dong Geon Lee scored the only super raid (four points) of the match.

The only bright spark for England came from defender Tejash Depala, whose effective ankle lock got him eight tackle points which included multiple super tackles. He even showed his team’s raiders the way to go as he also helped himself to a couple of raid points. Overall, Republic of Korea totally outplayed England and go into the semi-final having topped Group A with an unbeaten streak.
