The International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) officially commenced the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup in Ahmedabad today in the presence of the captains of the 12 competing nations. This was the first time ever when the 12 skippers had gathered in their national jerseys ahead of kabaddi’s gala event that begins on Friday, October 7. The teams – Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, England, Iran, Japan, Kenya, Poland, Republic of Korea, Thailand, United States of America and hosts India – have made their intentions of winning the trophy loud and clear. With all matches for the tournament set to be played at the state-of-the-art stadium, The Arena by TransStadia, the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup is going to be the biggest kabaddi spectacle the world has ever seen.

Commenting on the occasion, the IKF President, Janardan Singh Gehlot said, “This is the watershed moment for the sport of kabaddi, globally. The International Kabaddi Federation has been working to develop kabaddi as a competitive discipline. With the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup, the sport is all set to break through on a global stage. There is a lot of excitement among all participants and we are sure that the same energy will be transferred to the fans watching it in stands and screens across the world. It gives me immense pleasure to see such diversity in the participation. I am sure the teams will inspire many more people in their respective countries to take up the sport.”

The 12 captains were of the same opinion as they felt grateful for such an opportunity which will ultimately increase the popularity of the sport in their respective countries. The tournament will follow a round robin league format up till the semi-finals, followed by a much anticipated finale on October 22. The teams are divided into two groups of six teams which will narrow down to the victors in a fortnight.

Star Sports will be the official broadcast partner of the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup. All matches will be telecast exclusively on the Star network and hotstar and will reach out to significant clusters of the population in four different languages, i.e., English, Hindi, Kannada and Telugu. The tournament is also going out to audiences globally in over 120 territories.

The opening fixture will see hosts and favourites India face off with Republic of Korea on October 7 at 8pm IST. As the most anticipated sporting event gets underway, fans can expect to witness a great display of pure talent, strength and tactics.
