Temi Tope Adewalure: We are a force to reckon with

12 October 2016

Before the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup began, not many had heard of a mercurial raider in Temi Tope Adewalure, who represents England. This week, against Australia, when the English recorded their first victory in the tournament, Adewalure was the star who emerged from the game after recording an astonishing 27 raid points, the most by a player until then.

The man, who is popularly known as ‘T’, started playing kabaddi at the University level before being part of the national team. In an exclusive chat with the super raider, he gave us an insight into his game as well as the team’s. Excerpts:

Q: How does it feel representing England at the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup?

A: It’s an honour to represent your country. We’ve got a tightly knit team who share a good understanding with each other and I’m really excited to play with this team.

Q: What’s your favoured position in the team? Attack or defence?

A: I would say both, because I like to think of myself as an all-rounder. Personally though, I like to attack, especially with my quick feet movements. I look to bag a couple of points for my team and I think that would be beneficial.

Q: Tell us a little about your team captain Someshwar Kalia. We’ve heard he is the one who got you hooked you on to kabaddi…

A: Absolutely! Someshwar has a lot of experience and even his knowledge of the sport are reasons why he has been handed over the captaincy. He’s been playing the sport for quite sometime now and he gives his inputs whenever required and encourages us in what we’re doing which helps boost our morale.

Q: What about your team coach Ashok Das? How instrumental has he been in your kabaddi journey?

A: Like our captain, our coach is an amazing person! We might be playing on the mat, but our coach is the one who points us in the right direction, guiding us along the way, strategizing the game, teaching us top techniques to help tackle the opposition. We are going to give our best for that man and make him proud. He’s been fantastic and he deserves it.

Q: Is there a certain quality in the team, that sets England apart from the others?

A: I think it’s the passion among us for kabaddi. With passion as our weapon, we are capable of showing the world we could be a force to reckon with and use that as our motivation to do well in the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup.

Q: What are your targets for the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup? And what are England’s chances at the tournament?

A: Our aim is to win! We are actually the underdogs coming into this competition and we are going to put our best foot forward. This is such a great platform and a new experience for all of us, but we are focused on winning. As for our chances, the team has a fantastic balance. We just need to hold on to that balance, play to our full potential and we’ll be unstoppable.

Temi Tope Adewalure will look to continue his rich vein of form in England’s next clash on October 14, versus Argentina. Meanwhile, don’t forget to check out the Leaderboard of teams and players so far!
