Anup Kumar: We don’t intend to take any team lightly

07 October 2016

Amidst all the excitement of the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup, he cuts a calm and collected figure. We’re talking about Captain Cool Anup Kumar of India. Leading the charge for the One Big Blue brigade at the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup, Kumar is known for his incredible leadership skills and success ratio. He has also proved himself in the Star Sports Pro Kabaddi time and again, showcasing his true mettle.

We were thrilled to meet Anup Kumar who took time out of his busy schedule ahead of the global spectacle in Ahmedabad. Excerpts:

Q: How do you feel representing and captaining Team India at the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup?

A: It is a matter of ultimate honour and pride to represent your nation. All players are grateful and we are here to win the World Cup and want to bring home the glory; that’s what we wish for.

Q: As captain, what do you think of your team’s chances? How have the preparations been?

A: We have a formidable team. And with the right mentality, we will give it our best – no matter what! The preparations have been on in full swing for the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup. All the players are excited and really looking forward to it. Our training was centred around polishing and developing the skills each player is known for. Offensive and defensive training have also been the focus areas for us in training.

Q: Are there any targets you have set for the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup?

A: We don’t intend to take any team lightly. Our aim is to win the trophy for India and make our country proud.

Q: Who do you think are your toughest competitors?

A: All the teams look quite strong and geared up, but I feel Iran will pose a challenge to us during the course of the tournament. Republic of Korea and Australia are also teams to watch out for.

Q: Tell us a little about your coaches…

A: Our head coach, Balwan Singh, is quite experienced as he has been in-charge of the Indian team for a long time now. He understands the players well and analyses the opposition before each game. Balwan Sir and even Bhaskaran Sir are motivating and inspiring. They made sure that we get the best practice and training sessions. It’s going to be tough but we are ready for the big challenge.

Q: Any message you would like to give all the fans out there?

A: I would urge the fans to continue supporting our team in the same way they’ve been doing so far. We know they cheered for us during the Star Sports Pro Kabaddi but now they have to cheer for us as one country.

India will play the inaugural match versus Republic of Korea at 8pm IST on October 7. With the whole world watching, can Anup Kumar and his men in blue put up a memorable performance for years to come? Tune into the Star network and hotstar to catch all the live action.
